After having opened Saturday’s Red Raider Duals at Greenville High School with a loss to Hillcrest, the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team rebounded to win three straight matches before falling to West-Oak in the third-place match to finish the exhausting day with a 3-2 record.

The Demons, who are ranked second in the most recent 4A state poll, were upended by Hillcrest, which is ranked fifth in 5A, 48-18. Ted Monroe’s charges responded to that setback by thumping Palmetto (54-18), Ridge View (78-0) and Wade Hampton (62-18) to advance to the consolation finals against West-Oak, which sits atop the AAA state poll. In that match, L-E came out on the short end of a 43-21 decision.

The Saturday tourney gave L-E a 24-4 record in dual matches.

Monroe said the task at hand for his team is to be ready for the first two scheduled rounds of the 4A Lower State duals tournament. By virtue of winning Region 6, the Demons will host first and second round action on Saturday, Feb. 4.

“We have 13 days to put our best possible lineup on the mat for the first two rounds of the playoffs. We will host that day and if we win (two matches) we will host round three (on Monday, Feb. 6.)”

Bulldogs drub Red Foxes: Camden closed out its regular season wrestling schedule with a 45-24 win over visiting Hartsville last Thursday night inside the Dog Pound.

The hosts opened with Jalen Holliday receiving a forfeit at 170 pounds before both sides forfeited the 182-pound weight class.

The Bulldogs then reeled off three straight victories starting with Chris Todd’s first period pin at 195 pounds. Donovan Engram then took a 13-9 decision over Allontate Ellerbe at 220. That was followed by Jevontae Salmond’s first period pin at heavyweight.

Camden would later get a win from Benny Rost at 120 pounds thanks to an 11-10 decision victory over Landon Carpenter. Caid Cokley would defeat Ethan Welsh, 11-4, at 132 pounds before Garrit Strunga scored a first period pin at 138 pounds. Will Jordan also scored a first period pin at 145 pounds Darius Brisbon was awarded a forfeit at 160 pounds to close the evening.

The Bulldogs will travel to Columbia High School on Saturday to compete in the Region 4-AAA individual tournament to determine qualifiers for the AAA Upper State tournament to be held in Camden on Feb. 17-18.

CHS heads to West-Oak on Feb. 4 for its duals tourney opener.
