Penry Gustafson

Penry Gustafson of Camden has announced her intention to run as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Congressional 5th District of South Carolina.

Gustafson joins six other Republican candidates in the race, including two from Kershaw County. No Democrats have filed to run as of yet.

Gustafson says she is a lifelong Republican from Columbia and has lived in Camden since February 2015. She said her desire is to lead with common sense and decency. Her broad work experience, her involvement with the community and her dismay of the current political atmosphere have compelled her to run for Congress, she said.

“Fewer and fewer decent, hard-working people are willing to face the scrutiny of the public eye to run for office,” she said. “Let’s bring back honor and respect to government.  We need to lead by example, discipline, and compassion. As your congresswoman, I truly want to be a voice for all.”

Gustafson says in addition to bringing back decency, honor and respect to public office, her top issues include working to reduce unemployment in the district, striving for racial reconciliation and promoting respect among all groups and working to pass legislation to establish term limits for elected officials.

A former case manager for the Richland/Lexington Disabilities and Special Needs Board, Gustafson also built and enjoyed a successful career as a sales representative for Delta Foremost Chemical Corp.  Now she spends her time taking care of family and serving the community through church and various organizations, she said.  She is an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Columbia and the Kershaw County GOP.

Gustafson has been married to Todd Gustafson for 10 years. They have three children together in their blended marriage.  She attended Newberry College as a Founders Scholar and graduated second in her class in 1992.  She continued her education at the University of South Carolina with a full graduate assistantship from 1992 to 1994.
