GOP healthcare plan difficult to fathom

Recently, the U.S. GOP House leaders okayed legislation to restructure our nation’s healthcare system. The Affordable Care Act, (ACA), also known as “Obamacare.”

Their healthcare legislation priorities are hard to fathom. In many aspects this should be a wake up call for the attack on the poorest segment of our country’s population.

The working and less privileged class must always remember that this nation is founded to do away with the classes special privileged. The working and less privileged have the same interest, which is to see that this nation has a life for all Americans worth living.

It took a 1971 bill sponsored by the Democrats to help protect inheritances and Medicare benefits to Social Security to keep the elderly from being the poorest segment of this country’s population. The Democrats chose not to accept things as they are but to challenge the obvious.

It was a time of change for the better in a country that was resistant to change. Overcoming today’s challenges will require the same dedication and sense of urgency that enabled the past generation.

In today’s workforce, there is no refuge. Older Americans are opting to work longer -- because of healthcare -- instead of retiring, reversing the decades-long trend of early retirement.

A life isn’t worth living in an unhealthy economy, unstable democracy and a world not at peace.
