We would like to offer our hearty congratulations to nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist Robert Ariail, who was honored this past weekend by the S.C. Press Association with an SCPA Lifetime Achievement award.

Ariail, a three time Pulitzer Prize finalist, has collected a wall full of awards during a career that has spanned nearly three decades. The man has directed his prodigious talents toward some of the most important political issues facing our state and our nation. That the SCPA saw fit to honor him with this special recognition -- something the association does not do very often -- is both fitting and telling.

For like him or not -- and we do like him -- the man is very good at what he does. More important, in an atmosphere that seems to become more knee-jerk and hostile every day, Ariail has always kept a strong sense of balance. He dives deeper than most. His cartoons are sharp, biting, occasionally downright harsh, but fair. He skewers all sacred cows, not just those grazing to the right or the left of the field. If it deserves a punch, he gives it a punch.

For those who don’t like what he has to say, that’s OK – this is America and you have the right to turn the page, put down the paper, or otherwise find someone else who is more agreeable to you.

But make no mistake, his job is not to entertain or mollify; it is to call attention to those things that need attention and to challenge the status quo.

So again, congratulations, Mr. Ariail -- and thank you for your work.
