A sign in front of Springdale Plaza officially announces that Starbucks -- along with Firehouse Subs and Kay Jewelers -- is coming to Camden this fall.

At last, the long swirling rumor is confirmed: Starbucks Coffee is coming to Camden.

Charles Vita, owner of ProVest, the development company that owns Springdale Plaza Shopping Center in Camden, confirmed Wednesday that the popular coffee chain is, in fact, the third tenant for a new retail space being built in Springdale Plaza.

“We are very excited,” Vita said. “We are thrilled to bring Starbucks, Firehouse Subs and Kay Jewelers to Springdale Plaza and we thank our tenants and the city of Camden, all of whom worked so hard and without whom this would not be happening.”

A sign stating that Starbucks, Firehouse Subs and Kay Jewelers is coming in Fall 2017 was erected in the right-of-way earlier this week.

Passers-by have probably noticed the 6,600-square-foot building, which has been built to house three retail spaces, facing U.S. 1 near Springdale Drive that is going up adjacent to Arby’s.

Vita confirmed in October 2016 that Firehouse Subs and Kay Jewelers were coming; at the time he said he was still negotiating with several companies to occupy the third space, but indicated that Starbuck’s was a contender.

“It’s been a lengthy -- but definitely worthwhile -- process and in fact there are still some things in progress,” Vita noted.

Camden Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford said she is pleased with the news and welcomes all new additions to the Camden business community.

“I am happy that they are coming,” Drakeford said.  “This addition to the city will make a lot of people happy. Thank you Starbucks for selecting Camden; we appreciate you being here.”

Starbucks started as a single roaster/retailer which sold whole bean and ground coffee, tea, and spices in the Pike Place Market in Seattle in 1971. Today, Starbucks has more than 24,000 retail stores in 70 countries and offers a wide variety of food, beverage and specialty products.
