The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Office in Camden will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 13. The vigil will take place at the Kershaw County Courthouse grounds, 1121 Broad Street, Camden. All members of the community are invited to attend and asked to wear blue to show support for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

In South Carolina, more than 3,800 new cases of child abused and neglect were filed in Family Court during 2016. Currently, cases affecting more than 8,000 children are pending statewide. Trained and dedicated volunteers are needed to be independent voices for the children.

The South Carolina Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program trains and supervises volunteers to serve as court appointed Guardian ad Litems in counties throughout the state. These child advocates provide independent reports to the court regarding the best interests of the child. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, be able to pass a background check and complete a free training program before being assigned to a case.

A free training begins June 19. For more information, contact the Guardian ad Litem Kershaw County Office at (803) 425-1415 or visit
