The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to replace the stadium light poles at Lugoff-Elgin High School for $204,750.

Chairman Joey Dorton was not present.

During recent board meetings, trustees discussed replacing two light poles, one which is currently on the ground and the other which was damaged during a recent thunderstorm.

All of the poles are estimated to date back to the time of Hurricane Hugo.

“It’s a safety issue, so it’s just a matter of time before those other two come down,” said Vice Chair Mara Horton Jones.

After Trustee Kim Horton DuRant expressed concern that the money used to pay for the poles would come out of funds previously designated for North Central Middle School, Kershaw County School District Chief Financial Officer Donnie Wilson said the cost of the poles will be covered by insurance, as well as school district construction money primarily remaining from the building of the new Jackson School.

“I’m not going guarantee it, but I guarantee it’ll take care of a substantial amount,” he said.
