Mitchell receives Compleat Lawyer Award from USC School of Law

Cody T. Mitchell of Bethune was named the recipient of the 2017 Silver Compleat Lawyer award from the University Of South Carolina School Of Law. The Compleat Lawyer Awards were established in 1992 by the University Of South Carolina School Of Law Alumni Council to recognize alumni for outstanding civic and professional accomplishments. Recipients are individuals who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and exemplify the highest standards of professional competence, ethics and integrity.

Mitchell is a cum laude graduate of Presbyterian College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and business.  While attending Presbyterian College, Mitchell served as student body president, ROTC battalion commander, and president of his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order.    

Upon completing his undergraduate work, Mitchell attended the University Of South Carolina School of Law where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence.  While attending law school, Mitchell served as vice president of the Student Bar Association and distinguished himself as a member of the Order of Barristers, Moot Court Bar and ABA National Moot Court team.

Mitchell practices law in Hartsville with his mentor, Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, Jay Lucas at the law offices of Lucas, Warr & White.  Professionally, Mitchell is a member of the American Bar Association, the S.C. Bar, and the Darlington County Bar and he is admitted to practice in all South Carolina state courts, United States District Court of South Carolina and United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.

In addition to his civil practice, Mitchell serves as a Judge Advocate in the United States Army Reserves.  He is also a Commandant List graduate of the following:  Judge Advocate Basic Course, Basic Officer Leader’s Course, Judge Advocate Tactical Staff Officer Course, Judge Advocate Advanced Course and United States Army Airborne School.

Outside of his own legal practice, Mr. Mitchell serves as the municipal court judge for the towns of Hartsville, and Bethune.

As a member of the S.C. Bar, Mitchell serves as the chair-elect of the military and veteran law sections of the S.C. Bar Association.  Also an active member of the S.C. Bar’s Young Lawyers Division, Mitchell was elected by his peers to represent the 4th judicial circuit.  In addition to being the 4th circuit representative, Mitchell also serves as chairman of the Young Lawyers Division Military Support Committee.  Mitchell is a member of the American Association for Justice and the S.C. Association for Justice and was elected by his colleagues to serve on the S.C. Association of Justice’s board of governors representing the 4th circuit.  Mitchell also serves on the Board of Directors for the S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center. 

He was also named the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumnus by Presbyterian College.      

In addition to serving as a board member and volunteer legal counsel for Darlington County Habitat for Humanity and S.C. Lions Vision Services, Mitchell serves on the staff for American Legion’s annual Palmetto Boys State.  Mitchell is also a member of the Hartsville Rotary Club, Hartsville Kiwanis Club, Lynchwood AFM Lodge No. 197, and Harmony Baptist Church.

Cody is the son of Sandy T. Brown and the late T.W. Brown of Bethune.
