CAMDEN SENIOR LINDSAY PIERCE will try for a second consecutive AAA state pole vault championship at this weekend’s state meet at Spring Valley High School.

Five Kershaw County athletes --- representing all three county high schools --- will compete in the two-day South Carolina High School League state track and field championships which begin today and will continue through tomorrow at Harry Parone Stadium at Spring Valley.

Camden High will have a pair of entries in senior pole vaulter Lindsay Pierce and senior Tajz Bradley in the triple jump.

Pierce, the defending AAA state champion in his specialty, took the Upper State title in Seneca last Saturday with a winning jump of 12-6. That was the top figure cleared by any AAA pole vaulter in last weekend’s qualifying meets.

Bradley finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 34-04, which not only qualified her to compete in the state meet, but also set a new Camden High School record in the triple jump in the process.

Lugoff-Elgin will have a pair of athletes making the short trip up Highway 21 in senior Thai Wood and sophomore Gatlin Lawson in the 4A side of the competition.

Wood had the longest discus throw on any athlete in the state which he had in last Saturday’s qualifier with a toss of 140-00.50. Wood then doubled by qualifying in the shot put with a heave of 44-10.50.

Lawson will compete in both sprint events after last Saturday’s qualifier in which he ran the 100 meters in a clocking of 11.12 and in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.10. Both were third best in the state in the 4A ranks.

For the second year in a row, North Central’s Jasmine Dunlap qualified for the state meet. The Lady Knight sophomore stopped the clocked in 1:03.10 in the 400-meter dash, which was the seventh best time for the eight state qualifiers.
