This past weekend, 10 gymnasts from Spirit Athletics in Lugoff traveled to Greensboro, N.C., for the AAU Southeast regional competition.

The bronze team competed Saturday and finished fifth out of 20 teams from five states. The bronze team, comprised of six gymnasts, had 11 podium event finishes and six of those were first-place wins. Addison Trimnal finished second All Around in her age group, while two girls, Addison Komarnicki and Julia Lee, were All Around age group regional champions.

“This is the only the second full year our gym has been competing, so I am thrilled the girls did so well at such a big competition,” coach Brittney Holland said.

The silver team, comprised of four gymnasts, competed on Sunday in a session with more than 200 gymnasts representing 33 teams from five states. The four girls from Spirit Athletics came home with 12 podium event finishes, and eight of those were first place wins. Tristan Ware finished second All Around while Ella Denton and Hadley Costello finished first All Around, making them age group regional champions.

“We are so proud of the way our gymnasts represented our gym, town and state,” Holland said.

Because of their all around scores at the regional meet, Addison Komarnicki and Addison Trimnal also qualified for the South Carolina district team.

While the regional competition was the biggest of the season, it was not the only one in which the gymnasts had been successful. Spirit Athletics took teams to six competitions around the state between the months of January and May. The bronze team finished first in five out of the six competitions, and in April, they won the AAU state championship at the state meet in Rock Hill.

In addition to the overall success of both the bronze and silver teams, there are also two gymnasts who are ranked nationally. Ella Denton, who competes in the Excel Silver category, is ranked 25th in the nation with a floor score of 9.85. Addison, who competes in the Excel Bronze category, is ranked nationally in two events. She is 28th in the nation with a score of 9.875 on the vault and 87th All Around with a score of 38.775.

Now that this competition season is over, the gymnasts will be taking a two-week break before getting back on the mat to prepare for the next competition season.
