United Way of Kershaw County is seeking volunteers from church groups and civic organizations to assist with its home repair program which provides services for economically disadvantaged county homeowners. Volunteer groups can determine which houses to repair based on their number of volunteers, skills and available time frame.  UWKC’s Housing Director Marie Sheorn says there is a continual waiting list of 40 to 50 people requesting home repairs.

“We are so thankful for our current volunteers, they do great work. (But) there is always a waiting list of people needing repairs so we could always use more volunteers,” Sheorn said.

Home repair groups do not make major repairs such as HVAC repairs, foundation issues or major roof issues. The volunteer groups are led by skilled adults and some high school and college aged volunteers

Other home repair resources for Kershaw County include the following:

- Salkehatchie Summer Service, takes place in June

- Weatherization and Repair Ministry (WARM), takes place during Christmas and New Year’s

- Kershaw Baptist Association Home Repair Blitz, takes place in April or May. Churches also schedule their own time for repairs.

Trinity Baptist and Grace Episcopal also assist with various home repair projects.

To apply for the above programs, contact Marie Sheorn at 803-432-0951 on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Other resources, which can be contacted directly, are as follows:

- Wateree Community Action Inc. Weatherization Program (The Camden office can be reached at 803-432-7640. The Sumter office can be reached at 803-773-6512)
