On Feb. 17 the Downtown Camden Guild hosted the second annual Downtown Divas Go Red for Women’s Heart Health Month event. Nearly 100 women participated in the tour of downtown businesses, which included free health screenings provided by KershawHealth hospital. The event was spearheaded by Jennifer Shaw and Gail Carter of First Community Bank.

“Working together, these two women were able to pull off a fantastic event that highlighted the issues surrounding women’s heart health, while also promoting local businesses,” said Wade Luther, economic development director for the city of Camden.

Ladies who participated were given the opportunity to have health screenings, purchase t-shirts to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA), and receive coupons and gift certificates to many local merchants, including Sam Kendall’s, Travis’ Salon, Broad Street Market, and the Artist’s Attic.

The night culminated with a guest speaker during the opening night for Salud Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar in Teneleven Galleria. Other refreshments and wine were provided by The Catery on Broad and Trader’s of Camden.

The night was a successful one for raising awareness and fundraising for the AHA. The DCG raised $1,200 for the AHA, a 20 percent increase over last year’s figures. Cory Ritchie, Midlands Director for the AHA, was shocked at the increase, saying it is one of the largest she had seen in her tenure.

DCG President, Edward Hinson, was pleased with the results as the event combined the city’s efforts of promoting businesses downtown with health awareness and fundraising for community efforts.
