A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Heyward K. Oates, Sr., 86, of Camden, SC, will be held at  3:00 PM, Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Pastor Billy Hughes and Don Jarvis will officiate. Burial will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, 1875 Antioch Road in Camden. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Heyward passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at his home. Born in Byrdtown, SC, he was a son of the late Clarence and Lillie Griggs Oates. He joined the S.C. Home Defense Force at the age of fourteen and was a graduate of Lamar High School. Heyward continued his service in the National Guard and U.S. Navy and retired from DuPont after 34 years.

Heyward enjoyed selling produce door-to-door throughout Camden for 25 years. Even through his final months of life, he was often greeted by former customers with, “Whoop! Whoop! Tater Man!” He loved his family and neighbors and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Heyward’s joy was attending church and gospel singings.

Heyward was married to the late Mary Blyther Oates for 52 years. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Truel; sister, Mildred Segars; and brothers, C.L., Roy and Howard Oates. Survivors include daughter, Robin Ruff (Craig); son, Heyward “Kenny” Oates, Jr.; and son-in-law, Lee Truel, all of Camden; grandchildren, Helen Truel Tackett (Lee) of Lexington, Erin Ruff Monroe (Sam) of Columbia and Jason Ruff (Kelsey) of Elgin; six great-grandchildren; and a faithful friend, Lib Walden of Hartsville.

The family would like to thank Tidewater Hospice of Columbia, especially Melva King and Michelle Landge for their exceptional loving care. Memorials may be made to El Bethel Faith Community Church, 905 Longtown Rd, Lugoff, SC, 29078 or to Tidewater Hospice Foundation, tidewaterhospice.com.
