Budget time

Across Kershaw County and the state, local governments are putting finishing touches on the upcoming fiscal year’s budgets. Indeed, Kershaw County Council will take up final reading tonight of its FY 2018 budgets.

All things considered, we seem to be in fairly good shape locally. That’s not to say we have plenty of money and are solving all our problems with the stroke of a check. Rather, we have folks who are genuinely working hard to do the best they can with what we’ve got. Passions may run a little high and, ultimately, no one will get everything they want. So we appreciate the generally collegial atmosphere in which these discussions have taken place. And, we are greatly appreciative of the enormous amount of time, diligence and hard work local government officials have been putting into what is, for the most part, a monumentally thankless task.

We also appreciate and applaud the continued efforts to maintain open and transparent lines of communication. Unforeseen circumstances and issues can and do arise and as such need to be dealt with, in the open, in a carefully reasoned and deliberative manner. No one likes to feel like they’ve been blind-sided or misinformed. No one likes to be accused of conducting duplicitous machinations behind closed doors.

We also would like to point out that in a free society the business of governing is a two-way street. Therefore, we encourage as much citizen involvement as possible. Get out to public meetings. Become informed.

Take part in your future.
