Exit 98

The city of Camden recently completed an exciting and important project: installation of lighting on Exit 98 at I-20 and U.S. 521.

The project called for placing energy efficient LED street lights from the interstate exit down U.S. 521 to Century Boulevard.

The difference -- pardon the expression -- is like night and day.

At first, this may not sound like such a big deal -- after all, doesn’t everyone do this? Aren’t all interstate exits lit?

Actually, the answer is “no.” Not everyone does this and relatively few interstate exits are lit. In fact, with the completion of this project, Exit 98 becomes the only lighted exit on I-20 between Florence and Columbia. That’s around 80 miles of highly traveled four-lane highway -- and we are the only lit exit between those two places.

Obviously, businesses around interstate exits generally have decent lighting -- otherwise they wouldn’t be in business -- which motorists can see from the highway. But the entrance and egress ramps and the roadways and streets themselves may not be that well lit, if they have any lighting at all.

So what this does is make Exit 98, and Camden, a lot more inviting, especially to people traveling at night. A lighted exit is one that communicates a sense of safety and an idea that civilization is, in fact, just off the highway right here. Thus, that translates to more stops and more visits and ultimately, more revenue for us.

But even for locals who happen to be on the road after dark, this is a welcome addition. Anyone who has ever come in from a long trip out of town or simply has to be driving later in the evening or early in the morning in that area will undoubtedly appreciate the relief the brighter lighting along the roadways and exit ramps will bring.

So we applaud the city of Camden for making this happen. We truly believe this is a good investment on many levels.
