The city of Camden and Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union announced Monday that Camden will be the location of the credit union’s first service center in Kershaw County. The 1.5-acre site, purchased from local developer Mac Willetts of Town & Country Development, will be built at the corner of Battleship Road and West DeKalb Street (U.S. 1).

In a joint press release, Palmetto Citizens President/CEO Nick Wodogaza and Camden City Manager Mel Pearson, said the decision to select Camden has been more than a year in the making.

“City staff has thoroughly enjoyed working with Palmetto Citizens, their representatives and Mr. Willetts to make their move here a reality,” said Pearson.

Wodogaza said Palmetto Citizens is looking forward to opening its Camden Service Center to bring what he said is the credit union’s “low-cost financial solutions” to area residents.

“We’re excited to offer the same personalized service to the residents of Kershaw County we have been providing our members since 1936,” Wodogaza said.

According to Willetts, locals will recall the property as the site of the Hosiery Mill factory.

“We have been working with the great folks at Palmetto Citizens, city staff and others for quite some time to put this exciting deal together,” Willetts said. “We welcome them to our community. I know everyone here will do our best to guide them to a speedy grand opening.”

Pearson said the city will help Palmetto Citizens complete its project so the credit union can “open their doors as soon as possible.”

The new Palmetto Citizens Camden Office is currently scheduled to open in early summer of 2018. The credit union likely will hire people from the area, as well as transfer current staff who live nearby.

Palmetto Citizens is also finalizing plans for an additional Camden ATM location to be available later this year.

According to Wodogaza, the credit union expanded their field of membership back in 2015 to allow residents, small businesses and other organizations in Kershaw County to join their not-for-profit financial institution.

Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union has been serving their member-owners since 1936. Today, Palmetto Citizens serves more than 63,000 members and operates from 13 Midlands locations and more than 40 ATMs.
