School construction

On today’s front page, readers will see a story by Senior Writer Martin L. Cahn from Tuesday night’s meeting of the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees. The story’s primary focus is on the upcoming construction of three new schools: Camden Elementary School, Lugoff Elementary School and Wateree Elementary School.

The takeaway from Tuesday night’s meeting is that construction costs are going to be around $5 million less than originally estimated.

In our book, that’s pretty good news.

Some may disagree -- indeed some have -- and granted, we expect all our elected bodies to be careful, if not downright parsimonious, with taxpayer money. There is certainly also the expectation that extreme due diligence will be practiced regard to millions of tax payer dollars being spent on capital projects. In other words, this is not necessarily meant to be a “pat on the back” for performing expected duties.

On the other hand, we do believe the board and the district are doing a good job with these capital projects. Furthermore, we hope the news that costs are coming in lower than expected will help ease the minds of some who have expressed concerns over the need and cost of these projects and the ability of the district to effectively complete them.

We are pleased with the progress so far and are confident the final product will be done well and responsibly.

In the meantime, we will be following the progress of this and other public projects with great attention and interest and, as always, we encourage the public to do the same.
