CAMDEN AND LUGOFF-ELGIN will renew their rivalry when the two sides meet to kick off the 2017 football season on Friday, Aug. 18 in an 8 p.m. start at Zemp Stadium.

High school football players in Kershaw County returned to the practice field last Friday to begin preparation for the 2017 season which opens up with Week Zero games for all three public school varsity programs on Friday, Aug. 18.

All four county programs have their dates set up for the fall season which, again, will kick off for Camden, Lugoff-Elgin and North Central with the 42nd annual Camden Shrine Club Football Jamboree at historic Zemp Stadium in Camden on Friday, Aug. 11.

All three county public schools will open their season one week later on Friday, Aug. 18 when Lugoff-Elgin makes the short trip across the Howard Speaks Memorial Bridge to to renew its cross-river rivalry against host Camden at Zemp Stadium. That game has been moved to an 8 p.m. start. That same night, North Central will host Eau Claire in a week zero battle. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Boonetown.

Here are some notes on the 2017 fall schedules:

* When Lugoff-Elgin and North Central visit Camden on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25, respectively, the kickoff times have been pushed back a half-hour to 8 p.m. All other games involving the three county high school teams will begin at the regular 7:30 p.m. start time.

* Camden High has increased its ticket price to $7 for all home games beginning this season. The fee is similar to many other schools in the state and all Region 4-AAA schools which charge $7. Lugoff-Elgin will continue to charge $6.

* Last season, North Central played seven of its 10 regular season games on the road. That would have left first-year head coach Tyronne Drakeford’s team with only three home contests this year. The Knights will play four home games, however, as Eau Claire agreed to move its Aug. 18 contest with NC from Columbia to Boonetown.

* For the second consecutive year, Camden will be the only team in the county which will play a Thursday night game in 2017 when first-year head coach Brian Rimpf and the Bulldogs head to Florence Memorial Stadium to meet West Florence in a non-region game on Sept. 14.

* There is no typo in looking at the Lugoff-Elgin schedule. The Demons do not have a bye until week 10, meaning Matt Campbell and company will conclude their regular season --- barring, of course, any weather-induced problems or postponements --- on Oct 20.

* Lugoff-Elgin will receive prime-time exposure when the Demons’ home game with Lakewood on Friday, Sept. 29 will be carried live over WACH Fox’s digital station, 57.2 (Time Warner Cable 1250) and streamed online at www.wach.com as part of the station’s WACH Fox’s Sonic Friday Night Rivals football package.

WACH sports anchor and former USC and NFL standout linebacker Corey Miller will handle play-by-play duties. Stacy Hough, who co-hosts The Zone on 94.9 FM in Columbia, will be the color commentator and WACH Fox’s Courtney King is the sideline reporter.

Camden Shrine Club Football Jamboree: The 42nd annual Camden Shrine Club Jamboree will continue to have six teams playing in three mini-games of two 12-minute quarters each at Zemp Stadium in Camden.

The event will kick off at 6:30 p.m.

The evening’s opener will have Buford facing A.C. Flora followed by Lugoff-Elgin and North Central in the second game. Host Camden will meet Andrew Jackson in the evening’s finale.

Scrimmages on tap: All three Kershaw County varsity football teams will begin their respective series of scrimmages beginning on Thursday, Aug. 3 and continuing into the following week culminated by the Camden Shrine Club Jamboree.

Here is the slate of scrimmages for each program:

Camden: Friday, Aug. 4 – at River Bluff (5 p.m.); Tuesday, Aug. 8 – vs. Chapin and Richland Northeast at Zemp Stadium (9 a.m.)

 Lugoff-Elgin: Thursday, Aug. 3 – at Blythewood (9 a.m.); Tuesday, Aug. 8 – at White Knoll (TBA)
