Back to school

Thursday is the first day of school for Kershaw County students.

The old saw about time flying never seems truer than this time of the year. Indeed, it seems like only yesterday children all over Kershaw County were celebrating the beginning of summer vacation and all the thrills and anticipation that entails.

And yet, here we are, two and half months later, and the first day of school is nearly upon us.

Surely nothing is more important than our children’s educations and a good first day can go a long way in making that educational experience a positive one.

We hope the first day will be a smooth launch of a successful year for everyone involved. For newbies, the day will undoubtedly be exciting -- and probably a little intimidating. For returning students, the day should still be exciting as new teachers, classes and even new friends will be appearing in their lives.

Once again, we implore the motoring public to exercise extra caution -- and patience -- especially during these first days of the school year. With buses back on the road, parents dropping off and picking up their children and kids walking to and from school, it may take a little time for schedules to iron out and everyone to get back into the swing of things.

As always, we wish our students all the best for a happy and successful year.
