With a victory to kick off the 2017 football season, Lugoff-Elgin head football coach/athletic director Matt Campbell is looking to extend the streak to two in a row to kick off 2017.

Campbell and the Demons must wait until Friday night’s contest at River Bluff to try and go 2-0 on the gridiron. Before that, however, the third-year L-E boss will head to the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) office in Columbia Wednesday morning to appeal the SCHSL’s recent realignment proposal to the organization’s executive committee.

Earlier this month, L-E was promoted to 5A --- the state’s largest division --- which was expanded to the largest 48 schools (up from 42 schools for 2016-18) in the state by enrollment. With a student body of 1,631 students, L-E ranks as the 43rd largest school in the state.

When the SCHSL unveiled its proposal, the Demons and Lady Demons were placed in Region 4-5A for the 2018-20 seasons along with Chapin , Dutch Fork, Irmo, Lexington, River Bluff and White Knoll.

At that time, Campbell said he and L-E principal Worth Thomasson were planning to file an appeal as to the proposal with the SCHSL.

Campbell would not tip his hand as to what he would say and/or bring to the executive board on Wednesday when he will make his presentation along with Thomasson.

Earlier this month, Campbell and Thomasson were devising an argument and a strategy. At the time, Campbell said if his appeal did not win over the executive committee, he and the school would live with the final decision and move on.

According to sources, a total of 26 of the 217 high schools which are members of the SCHSL are expected to file appeals with the 20-member executive committee.

Appeals will begin Wednesday  at 9 a.m., starting with Lugoff-Elgin. The second day of appeals is scheduled for Thursday starting at 8 a.m.

Each school, reportedly, has 10 minutes to state their case with 20 minutes after for any questions which members of the executive committee may have to ask of the representative(s) of the school making the appeal.
