Growth and services

Kershaw County has quite a few challenges to handle in the coming years. Indeed, anyone truly interested should read Vision 2030, which is available on the Kershaw County website. It’s a pretty thorough document -- study, roadmap, guideline -- outlining many issues facing all of us in the coming years.

We are growing; there’s no question about that and no stopping that -- and of course, we shouldn’t want to stop it. Obviously, growth -- properly managed -- is good.

But the reality is growth equates to people and development, which requires more services -- fire protection, police protection, adequate infrastructure, schools.

Growth is already seriously straining resources now, particularly in the area of fire protection. Through the years, Kershaw County has been blessed with a good, strong, well-trained and deeply dedicated group of volunteer firefighters who have given selflessly of time and energy to protect the community they love. Unfortunately, in recent times, many factors have put great strain on the fire service, especially the hard-working and selfless volunteers. Clearly, something has to be done -- and sooner, rather than later.

So we are glad to see Kershaw County Council take a proactive first step by forming an ad hoc committee to take a good hard, close look at the fire service. We hope they can come up with some workable solutions to ease that strain.

Another area of concern is the funding of school resource officers. This, too, is an issue that needs a workable, equitable, long-term solution. To that end, council has also appointed a committee to work with this situation.

Both committees will be reaching out to other government entities as well as the community as they seek information and try to determine and formulate recommendations. It’s not going to be an easy task.

We readily acknowledge that this is going to be difficult and in the end there are no perfect solutions.

But doing nothing is not an option.
