In what could be considered a rebuilding year, Camden opened its 2017 volleyball season by sweeping past Cardinal Newman and Richland Northeast  last Thursday in Columbia.

The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a 2016 campaign in which Paige Wilson’s charges won the AAA Upper State championship.

“We are capable team with a lot of potential,” Wilson said of a squad which includes five seniors to go along with four juniors and three sophomores.  “I was very pleased with the two wins and overall pleased.  There is always work to do but this was a great start to our season.”

The Lady Bulldogs took a pair from Cardinal Newman, 27-25 and 25-17, before breezing past RNE in their second match.

In the win over CN, senior Catherine Todd had 27 passes to target while classmate Jensen Williams and junior Katherine Coplin had 17 each. Senior Whitley Kahler had 14.

Junior Abby Irick was perfect on all 10 of her serves with four going for aces while Todd was 18-for-19 with three aces. Irick also dished out 17 assists.

Against RNE, Todd was 8-for-8 serving with four aces. Irick was next (7-8, four aces) followed by Coplin (6-8, 3). Irick also had 13 assists. Coplin had 17 passes to target while Todd had 13, Kahler 12 and Williams 11. Senior Grace McGugan had two blocks in the win.

Senior Peyton Truesdale, Kahler, Coplin and McGugan played well along the net in both matches, Wilson said, especially in the second contest.

“RNE had a big swinger that could have dominated at the net.  We defended her well so she was not a big factor,” she said.
