Led by Jeremy Campbell’s final time of 18:56, which was good for second place individually, the Lugoff-Elgin boys’ cross country team finished second in Tuesday’s eight-team meet hosted by Lancaster High School.

The Demons finished with 46 points, two shy of  Central which won the event with 44 points.  The host Bruins finished third with 52 points.

The young and improving Lady Demons’ squad took seventh in the girls’ portion of the meet.

Following Campbell to the finish line for the Demons, with their times, were Ewan Fleck (20:01), Dylan Whitehouse (20:08), Curtis Farlett (20:34), Patrick Koeppen (20:54), Zachary Koeppen (21:24) and Alex Robertson (21:28).

“Many of our runners set personal records,” said L-E head coach Matt Spolski of the day in Lancaster. “The weather was cool, making for perfect conditions for a late August race.

“This was a new course we ran on but the runners adapted well and paced themselves properly. Lancaster was a state-qualifier ahead of the (L-E) boys last season so it was nice to see us edge them out in this race.”

The Lady Demons were paced by a sixth-place finish from Olivia Robertson (24:20) who was followed by teammates Ashley Smith (28:04), Alicia Werden (28:51), Anna Smith (29:40), Julie Hunter (29:42) and Sara Johnson (32:18).

Last Saturday, the Demons and Lady Demons competed in a strong Skyhawk Invitational meet hosted by Hammond.

The Demons placed 14th out of 21 teams and the girls placed 16th.

The top seven finishers for the boys and their times were Campbell (19:46), Whitehouse (20:41), Fleck (21:08), Koeppen (21:37), Zander Harding (23:06), Thomas Smith (23:37), and Wade McIntyre (24:09).

The six quickest Lady Demons in the morning run and their times were Robertson (25:07), Smith (29:12), Werden (29:19), Hunter (30:38), Smith (31:58) and Johnson (32:40).

After having run twice in four days, the Demons and Lady Demons will get some time off before traveling to compete in the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Invitational at the Clemson Sandhills Research and Education Center on Saturday, Sept. 9.
