CAMDEN’S HEATHER WOOLARD RACES to the lead at the start of last week’s season-opening cross country meet at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site.

Camden did little to hurt its number nine preseason ranking in the AAA state boys’ cross country poll as the Bulldogs ran to victory in last Wednesday’s (Aug. 30) season-opening meet held at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site.

The Lady Bulldogs made it a clean sweep of the evening by winning their portion of the meet.

Led by senior Garrett Lawson, the Camden boys won the meet followed, in order, by Cheraw, Great Falls, McBee, and Columbia High.

Lawson completed the 3.1-mile layout in a time of 18:05. Sam Messinides (19:11), Grant Maree (19:37), K.P. Cassidy (19:52), and Ben Biattiata (20:06) finished out the top five finishers for Jerry Stokes’ troops.

Senior Julia Keen (22:44) led the way for the Lady Bulldogs’ victory which came over Great Falls and Columbia.

Rounding out the top five for Mark Chickering’s Lady Bulldogs were Mell Boucher (25:38), Heather Woolard (26:42), Megan Goodrich (26:51) and McKenzie Taylor (28:30).

(Web editor's note: The CHS cross country teams are slated to compete in Saturday's 2017 Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic at the Clemson Research Facility across from the Village at Sandhills on Clemson Road in northeast Columbia. According to the meet's website, races will start for different divisions between 8:30 and 11:45 a.m., with an awards and Hall of Fame induction ceremony at 12:30 p.m.)
