L-E volleyball faces tough competition in Charleston

ugoff-Elgin finished in 10th place in last weekend’s top-heavy Porter-Gaud Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Charleston.

Katie Ham’s squad defeated Hammond, Military Magnet Academy and Boiling Springs in the two-day event which kicked off on Friday.

The Lady Demons fell to defending AAA state champion Bishop England and then, Hilton Head, battling point-for-point in both pairings. They put up a good fight in matches with Wando, Ashley Hall and Stars Mill but did not win a set against either of those three opponents.

“The team definitely grew over the weekend,” said Ham of her team’s performance in the Lowcountry event.

The Lady Demons opened their season by finishing with an 8-4 record in the preseason Carolina Forest Tournament along the Grand Strand before heading into regular season play.

L-E opened with a split in a tri-match by beating A.C. Flora in two sets while falling to River Bluff, 2-0, in the nightcap. One day later, the Lady Demons took two straight from Westwood before dropping a pair against Blythewood in their second match of the evening.

The Lady Demons Next Tuesday, L-E (2-2) will travel to meet Camden in a 7 p.m. best-of-five match inside the Dog Pound.

Lugoff-Elgin will kick off its Region 6-4A slate of matches next Thursday when the Lady demons make to trip to face Hartsville in a 7 p.m. start.
