A Camden Fire Department (CFD) firefighter uses a hose to wash away propane gas from this late model Nissan Maxima parked at the Camden Business Center next door to the Kershaw County School District offices on West DeKalb Street in Camden as another firefighter monitors his progress just after noon on Sept. 1. CFD Capt. Johnny Mullis said the propane tank seen in front of the car on the left was in the trunk of the car when it apparently ruptured and started to leak. Mullis said propane, which is heavier than air, began to escape from the trunk, appearing as smoke, which alerted someone to tell the car’s owner who was inside the building. He said things could have been much worse. “If there had been a spark, it would have gone off like dynamite,” Mullis said.
