For the first 12 minutes of Friday’s game, North Central found itself going toe-to-toe with the state’s fourth-ranked class AA football team.

As the night wore on, however, the Knights wore down as Cheraw’s size and depth proved to be too much as the visiting Braves spoiled homecoming in Boonetown with a 49-14 victory over North Central.

The loss dropped first-year NC head coach Tyronne Drakeford’s squad to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in Region 4-AA. The Braves improved to 7-1 and won for the fourth time in as many 4-AA starts.

Trailing 7-0, the Knights evened the contest with quarterback Bubba Williamson finding junior wide out Markell Portee with a 52-yard scoring strike with 5:30 left in the first quarter. Williamson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior who committed to play his college football at Western Carolina University a day before the game, spotted the 6-foot-2 Portee on a slant route at the Cheraw 40. Portee split a pair of Brave defenders, bolted to his left and outran the last pursuer to the left top pylon and into the end zone for the touchdown.

Later in the contest, in the fourth quarter, Williamson hooked up with another of his favorite targets, junior Tyler Faulkenberry, on a 10-yard slant pattern on which Faulkenberry carried a Cheraw defender with him into the end zone for the second NC touchdown of the evening.

The loss came in only North Central’s second home game of the season.

The Knights will be back on the road Friday night to take on 4-AA rival Buford in their final away contest of the regular season. before closing with a pair of home games against Chesterfield and Cheraw, respectively.
