Buford holds off NC for Region 4-AA title

After having split a pair of five-set matches by winning on their respective home courts, North Central and Buford traveled to Andrew Jackson High School for Thursday’s Region 6-4A tie-breaking volleyball match.

It would be Buford which took the rubber match, topping the Lady Knights in five sets to claim the top seed from the conference in the class AA state playoffs which open Wednesday night. 

North Central (14-3, 11-2 in 4-AA) will host Keenan inside The Castle in Boonetown in Wednesday’s opening round. The start time is set for 6 p.m.

As for the conference tie-breaker, Buford took the first two sets, winning 25-21 and 25-22, before the Lady Knights won the third set, 25-19, and then forcing a tie-breaking fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-15. The Lady Yellow Jackets would take the finale, 15-10, to lock down the region’s top seed.

“We had great effort but we had too many unforced errors in the first two sets,” said NC head coach Andy Johnson following the setback. “Hopefully, we can learn from this and move on into the playoffs with confidence.”

Alayna Johnson led the Lady Knights with a match-high 24 kills while adding 15 digs and two aces. Madison Dixon helped form a potent 1-2 punch along the net with 15 kills to go along with nine digs.

McKenna Arrants and Rhi Hendrix added eight blocks each with Arrants haveing 10 digs and three blocks while Hendrix had a pair of blocks and an assist.

Peyton Holley had 47 digs from her Libero position and contributed five aces, three assists and two kills to the cause. Aaliyah White dished out 49 assists and had 12 digs and a kills while Tierra Preston checked in with 15 digs, a block and an ace.
