THE LADY DEMONS BREAK from the starting line in Tuesday’s Region 6-4A cross country championship meet in Darlington.

Both the Lugoff-Elgin boys’ and girls’ cross country teams finished in third place at Tuesday’s Region 6-4A championship meet held at Darlington Middle School.

Jeremy Campbell paced the L-E boys with a sixth-place finish which came in a time of 18:08, earning the junior All-Region 6-4A honors.

Dylan Whitehouse (19:04), Curtis Farlett (19:17), Patrick Koeppen (19:25), Ewan Fleck (19:36), Zander Harding (19:59) and Alex Robertson (20:44) rounded out the top seven times for the Demons.

L-E boys’ coach Matt Spolski said his runners did exactly what was asked of them on Tuesday.

“They stuck to the plan and ran great times,” he said of the effort of his runners. “We knew coming into this race that Darlington had posted some faster times recently. I asked them to run right behind their opponents to allow them to set the pace. This pushed them to find new limits for themselves.

“I am very proud of how deep they dug to give their all-out effort in this race.”

Darlington won the boys’ portion of the event with 20 points followed by Hartsville (49), L-E (58) and Lakewood (119).

Led by junior Diana Gleaton and freshman Olivia Robertson, who finished third and fourth with times of 22:11.40 and 22:41.38, respectively, the Lady Demons finished behind Hartsville and Darlington. Both runners earned all-conference honors for their finishes.

Julie Hunter (25:11.58) was 16th for L-E while Ashley Smith (25:51.73) and Alicia Werden (26:21.49) came in 18th and 19th, respectively, to round out the top five finishers and scorers for  Matt Mendelssohn’s harriers.

“It was an amazing sight to see how much team unity we had with the boys cheering on the girls and vice versa,” Mendelssohn said. “We’ve come a long way as a team this season.

“I’m extremely proud of the two female runners that made all-region: Diana Gleaton had already received one scholarship offer and showed a lot of guts down the home stretch, almost over taking the second overall spot. We have a lot to look forward to with freshman Olivia Robertson’s strong performance, yet again, this season at regionals. The future is promising for the Lady Demons as we approach mid-state qualifying weekend.”

L-E will compete at the Mid-State Qualifier at Sandhills on Saturday, Oct. 28. The top seven of 15 teams will qualify for the State Meet on Nov. 4 at Sandhills. Individual runners can qualify for the state meet by placing in the top five runners from teams not qualifying for the state meet.
