One of the perks of winning your conference championship is that you get to stay at home and face a lower seed in the first round of the state playoffs.

The Lugoff-Elgin volleyball team took full advantage of being the Region 6-4A champion and opened 4A Lower State tournament play by breezing to a 3-0 victory over visiting Dreher, the fourth-place finisher from Region 5, last Thursday inside the Demons Den.

Katie Ham and company made quick time of the Lady Blue Devils winning the first set, 25-7, the second, 25-13, before making an early evening of it with a 25-11 victory in the third set.

Senior Natalie Taylor led the hostesses with seven aces and 19 digs. Senior hitter Madi Campbell had seven kills while sophomore hitter Katie Napper had six kills. Junior setter/hitter Sarah Turner had 28 assists on the night.

With the victory, L-E will stay at home and hosts St. James High School tonight in a 6 p.m. start.

Should the Lady Demons get a victory this evening, they will stay put to host the winner of the A.C. Flora vs. North Myrtle Beach match in Thursday’s 4A Lower State semifinal which is set for a 6 p.m. start.
