Three 1983 Camden High School graduates have been nominated for national honors from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) for a Palmetto Leaf newspaper article they wrote on asbestos at the high school.

Robin Bishop, Mindy Blakely and Tal Johnson have been nominated to receive the NSPA’s Editorial Leadership Award, which will be presented at the organization’s national convention Nov. 19 in St. Louis.

The Palmetto Leaf entry is one of eight news articles which is being considered for the award.

More than 600 entries from throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico were considered for the prestigious honor, which is the only individual writing award the NSPA bestows to its member organizations.

The news story appeared in the Oct. 7, 1982, edition of the Camden High School newspaper and focused on the asbestos conditions at the high school.

Since the story appeared last fall, the inspection and detection of asbestos has already been completed at all district schools and the removal of asbestos at the high school has begun.

Leaf advisor Mary Ann Blaskowitz said the news article was a culmination of over a year and a half of work by the three students from the first time the newspaper was made aware of the problem.
