Warning! Huge propoerty tax increase coming!

The South Carolina Republican Party, the state party of opportunity, supports a tax policy designed to help the economy grow, not stunt the taxpayer. A massive body of scholarly evidence shows economic growth is stimulated or retarded by the levels and kinds of state and local taxes. Capital is attracted to where it is welcomed. The Kershaw County Republican Party recognizes that high property and income taxes repel capital migration and therefore retard economic growth.

Folks, the majority (four) of our county council members are out of touch with the taxpayer. They just voted on Oct. 24 to raise our property taxes by the maximum amount allowed by S.C. law. Councilmen Jimmy Jones, Al Bozzard, and Ben Connell had a much more conservative plan that would have given critically needed tax relief for the citizens of Kershaw County, but were voted down by the other four members. This was a great opportunity for our council to meet somewhere in the middle, but the spirit to compromise was absent.

It is time to let them know that we have had enough of the tax and spend mentality here in Kershaw County. They need to look at all programs in our budget and see what can be reduced. For instance, do we really need to be spending nearly $800,000 per year on Economic Development when most economists will tell you that less government is what stimulates the economy? What about the $250,000 we give to Central Carolina every year … is all that necessary? Or the $63,000 council spent to remodel the restrooms at the airport, $48,000 for 2 small (4’x7’) LED signs, $33,000 to the Chamber of Commerce and tens of thousands of dollars total to Historic Camden, the Equine Center, Fine Arts Center -- and I could go on and on.

But some will say that these aforementioned entities are vital to the community; then I would say, why don’t the citizens and business owners support them? Why do they need to be propped-up by the government with taxpayer money? Why does our government get to pick and choose the winners and losers with our money?

Remember this: Government can’t create jobs, it can only create debt. And debt can only lead to higher taxes!

PS: There was never an issue as to whether we need to fund our EMS; the issue was how to fund it. Also, the compromise would have been to use some of our huge reserve fund to offset the huge tax increase, one time only, not reoccurring from year to year.
