Opening day

For many, today is opening day for a different kind of hunting season -- bargain hunting season.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has become known as the day when everything goes on sale for the holiday season and bargains allegedly abound.

While we certainly don’t begrudge anyone else the opportunity to participate in the wild scrums that seem to be hallmarks of today, we would suggest a fun  -- even civilized -- alternative/addition to the holiday shopping plans: Small Business Saturday, which is tomorrow. This is an event that touts, celebrates and supports local small businesses. Without getting too mired in the rampant commercialism of the holidays, we nonetheless believe that shopping locally is a good thing, something that shows appreciation not only for friends and neighbors who own small businesses but ultimately benefits the entire community by keeping local dollars local.

In fact, to take it a step further, we would even suggest starting your Small Business Saturday sojourn by checking out tomorrow’s Shop Small Sunrise event in the park at Broad and Rutledge streets in downtown Camden. This event, which starts at 8 a.m., will feature a variety of fun things, including photos in a giant snow globe, hot chocolate and live entertainment.

In the meantime, let’s not lose sight of the spirit of the season. May your holidays be healthy, happy, prosperous and bright.
