We would like to offer a heartfelt thank you and pat on the back to the U.S. Post Office for giving Camden’s downtown post office building a much needed makeover.

As our readers may remember, about this time last year, we wrote about the down at the heels condition of our historic downtown post office building. At the time, the place was in a pretty decrepit state, with empty, barren looking planter boxes and unkempt grassy areas outside and peeling, fading paint both indoors and out. We opined that we hoped someone somewhere was taking note of the state of affairs and could move to remedy the situation.

We are pleased to report that our requests and hopes appear to be underway to being fulfilled. The outside is looking nice these days, with new landscaping and painting and, inside, preparations are underway for a new paint job as well.

While we obviously would not presume to state that our editorial is the reason these things are happening  -- we know ours was one of many concerns voiced over time -- we are pleased to see the post office being responsive to community concerns. After all, not only is such a building an important landmark in any town, this one is an especially iconic geographic and historic landmark.

Again, our heartfelt thanks!
