Kershaw County Council will give first reading of an ordinance to rezone some 126 acres in Lugoff during its meeting tonight at the County Government Center.

The rezoning involves a vacant tract located at Cricket Hill Drive and Cook Road, parallel to U.S. 1 in Lugoff. The property is currently zoned R-15, which is the designation that allows the least density. The developer wishes to increase density in order to bring county sewer to the proposed development.

Currently, the R-15 zoning allows for 145 100-foot wide by 150-foot deep lots. In order to do provide sewer without being cost-prohibitive, the developer is requesting a change from R-15 to R-10, so as to accommodate 208 lots of 75-foot width and 150-foot depth. The proposal also calls for a little more than 45 acres of the property to be open space.

The request was approved by the county planning commission and endorsed by county planning and zoning staff; the property is actually phase III of the existing Quail Creek subdivision.

Council will also consider awarding construction bids for several projects, including EMS stations, restroom renovations at the airport terminal building, and replastering of the pool at the Kershaw County Recreation Department swimming pool located on Battleship Road in Camden.

Council will also entertain a motion to direct the county administrator to conduct a “lessons learned” presentation of the recent property assessment process.

Council will also consider passage of a proclamation recognizing the 100th anniversary of the American Red Cross.

An executive session to discuss a contractual matter is also listed on the meeting agenda.

Kershaw County Council meets today at 5:30 p.m. at the County Government Center, 515 Walnut St., Camden. Meetings are open to the public. For more information go the county government website at
