We would like to offer our hearty congratulations and deepest thanks to John Potter, who was named the town of Elgin’s Citizen of the Year during the town’s annual Tree Lighting event held Nov. 30 in Potter Park.

Mr. Potter has served the town and the county in a variety of roles, including as chief of the Elgin Fire Department. He is one of those people who simply sees needs and works to fill them. He does not seek accolade or limelight, only ways and means to achieve positive solutions and outcomes.

If pressed, he would probably tell you he is blessed to live in a great community and a wonderful country and just wants to pay his blessings forward.

In fact, we are the ones who are blessed to have Mr. Potter, and many others like him, who help make our community the wonderful place it is.

For example, if you have passed through Elgin and noticed the small but stately Veterans Memorial or noticed how crisp and beautiful all the flags in town look, you are looking at some of Mr. Potter’s many ongoing projects. He has basically spent his life serving the town and the people of Elgin and Kershaw County, both personally and professionally. Fortunately for all of us, he shows no sign of slowing down.

So once again, congratulations and thank you very much, Mr. Potter. Yours is yet another terrific example to which we can all aspire.
