Lakewood outnumbers Dogs in 62-56 victory

Several numbers did not add up for the Camden boys’ basketball team, including the final ones.

The Bulldogs fell to Lakewood, thought to be the favorite in Region 6-4A, in a Tuesday night non-region contest, 62-56.

The host Gators shot 31 free throws to Camden’s 10 while being assessed for one personal foul in the first half as compared to 10 for Camden. The Dogs were also outscored, 25-13, in the third quarter after Ron McKie’s troops held a 22-20 halftime advantage.

Senior Chris Butler scored a career-high 13 points for the visitors (1-2) who also received 10 points from senior forward Donovan Belton.

Camden will travel to meet Lugoff-Elgin tonight in the Demons Den.

CHS girls drop low-scoring affair: The Camden girls fell for the first time in three outings in a 40-26 loss at the hands of Lakewood in a game in which the Lady Gators led after one quarter, 2-1, and took a 13-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

LHS was on top 27-16 after three stanzas.

Freshman Imani Wyatt led Natalie Jeffcoat’s squad with 10 points while sophomore Tiyana Peterson and senior Venus Sumpter were next for the Lady Bulldogs with seven and six points, respectively.

CHS JV girls stay perfect: Led by a game-best nine points from Treasure Green, the Camden junior varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 23-10 victory over visiting Lakewood on Monday.

Marie Engram’s troops received four points from Deniah Arthur, three from Jateanna Lee and two more from Nyla Jackson.
