Grab a cup of good cheer and a lawn chair and get ready for, well, almost anything: it’s time for the Boykin Christmas Parade.

Sponsored by Swift Creek Church, the parade will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m. A Gospel concert in Swift Creek Church, featuring various local area church choirs, will follow the parade.

The parade, known for its out-of-the-ordinary and quirky floats and festive atmosphere began 24 years ago, the inspiration and brain child of the late Alice Boykin, who passed away in August 2016.

Retired Clemson Extension Agent Rowland Alston, former host of SCETV’s acclaimed “Making It Grow” television show, remembered the first year Alice Boykin put the parade together. In fact, while Alice Boykin was known for her hospitality and love of parties, the Boykin Christmas Parade was not just another party; it was a commemoration of achievement, Alston said.

“When she first told me about the Christmas parade idea, I thought she was the craziest person in the world,” Alston said. “I thought nobody would come to see a combine and a herd of goats coming down the road! And yet, 20 something years later, it’s probably the best country Christmas parade in the South.”

This year’s grand marshal will be C.C. Canada. In addition to a wide variety of floats, Santa Claus will make an appearance: however, his mode of transportation, as always, will be a surprise.

“Santa Claus has come in on an ox and has parachuted in. It is always a surprise what Santa Claus’ ride will be,” parade organizer Wayne Belger said.
