Building the future

People driving around the county, especially around Camden, may see a number of projects in various stages of progress. In fact, several of these are nearly finished – and we think they are looking pretty good.

First, the new Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) and Applied Technical Educational Center (ATEC) buildings on U.S. 521 near I-20. One is just starting; one is  essentially done. In fact, a groundbreaking was held today for the ATEC building and nearby, not only are workers moving furniture and other accouterments into the CCTC building, they will be holding tours Monday and classes will be held in that building in January, freeing up the space CCTC was using in the basement of the County Government Center.

We are pleased to see these projects -- in all their stages -- and offer our congratulations to all involved. This is a good thing for the county and everyone in it.

Farther back in town, passers-by may have noted demolition work being done on the visitors’ side stands at Zemp Stadium; Martin Cahn’s story on today’s front page about Tuesday’s school board meeting gives the details of that project. We look forward to seeing that one come to fruition as well.

Finally, a few blocks down and over, the city of Camden’s tennis complex is nearing completion and hopefully should be up and operational in the very near future. We wish the city well in this endeavor and are very hopeful this will be an effective economic/tourism development tool, as well as a strong catalyst for some much needed improvements in that part of town.

Ultimately, projects such as these make important statements about our community. They show we care about our community’s future; we are proactive in planning for that future; and we have the confidence to build that future.

Those are good things to tell the world, indeed.
