The city of Camden, along with the Kershaw County Soil and Water Conservation District, Camden Tree Foundation and Camden Parks and Trees Commission held its Arbor Day celebration Dec. 19 in Kirkwood Common. This year’s celebration was in honor of long-time naturalist and advocate Alan Wooten, who passed away in August. More than 50 friends, neighbors and relatives turned out to honor Wooten. The city planted a live oak tree in Wooten’s memory near the Battle of Hobkirk Hill memorial. Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford read a proclamation honoring Wooten and Arbor Day and Kershaw County Soil and Water Commissioner Jeff Clark delivered a tribute to Wooten.
