Letter: Owners to blame for feral dogs

Seeing packs of feral dogs running loose on their property and watching them attacking their animals and children is a frightening situation for the people of Elgin to experience. Frankly, I’m surprised they put up with it as long as they have without doing something themselves.

First, let me say that it’s not the fault of the dogs. The problem is the owners who don’t control them. Unfortunately the animals will pay the price. Probably the ultimate price.

I don’t know what communications went on between the residents and Animal Control, but it seems to me with animals and pets being killed and a child being bitten it should have been handled considerably sooner and a whole lot more effectively.

I for one do not accept the excuse that Animal Control is understaffed and overworked. Animals and pets were being killed, children attacked and people terrified on their own property. Someone should have used their head, gotten help from another department, and done something before a child or other person was severely mauled or possibly killed! How would that “We were understaffed” sound in a lawsuit?

It sounds to me that someone really dropped the ball in this whole situation and provided absolutely no help to these people who were being terrorized by these animals.

I have heard no follow up to this situation in the Chronicle. I would certainly hope to hear that something is finally being done to effectively remedy the situation.
