Markell Portee exploded for a career-best 27 points in helping the North Central boys’ basketball team to a 61-59 win over host Buford in a Friday night game played in Lancaster County.

The victory gave Kerry Hayes and company a 4-5 record in Region 4-AA play heading into tonight’s home game with visiting Chesterfield which kicks off a regular season-ending three-game homestand for the Knights who will entertain Cheraw on Wednesday before Central heads to Boonetown on Friday.

In the girls’ game, Buford overcame a 22-point effort from NC junior guard Kali Tomlin to pin a 53-39 loss on the Lady Knights who fell to 1-8 in conference play.

L-E sweeps past Columbia: Lugoff-Elgin traveled to Columbia High School last Thursday for its final set of non-conference games of the regular season and returned to the West Wateree with a pair of victories.

Von Duncan’s Lady Demons collected a season sweep of Columbia with a 53-26 win in the opener.

L-E got off to a good start, leading 11-4 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime. Columbia closed to within 35-24 after three stanzas before the Lady Demons closed with an 18-2 fourth quarter surge.

Duncan said that each Lady Demon contributed offensively with Caitlyn Simon creating several turnovers on defense and had several putbacks, which gave the Lady Demons a spark.

In the boys’ contest, the Demons got the sweep over Columbia by beating the Capitals for the second time this season, this time by a 57-39 count.

The double-digit win gave Garrett Knight and company a 16-5 record on the season. Senior guards Bradwin Salmond and Kevon Roberson led the winners with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

L-E, which is 3-3 in boys’ Region 6-4A play, has a pair of key home games this week starting tonight when Lakewood comes to the Demons Den followed by a visit from Hartsville on Thursday.
