The town of Bethune will move forward on a new automated billing system for its water department.

On a motion from Councilman Don Witham, the Bethune Town Council voted to allocate $6,000 to update and automate the water department’s billing system. The money will purchase a laptop computer and a software system designed by Nicholson Business Systems, a South Carolina based company that custom designs automated billing systems for public agencies and businesses.

“This will save us not only money in the long term, but it will immediately save us 35-40 hours just in labor per month,” Witham said.

The allocation will also buy a new laptop computer on which the billing software system will be installed, Witham said.

Also, council voted to allocate $1,000 in order to pay CSX Railroad for the right to bore under the railroad tracks in two places as part of the water upgrade.

Witham also informed council that the town’s auditor has strongly suggested that council purchase a fireproof filing cabinet for the town hall in order to keep its important records safe. He said preliminary research indicates that such a cabinet may cost anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000 and he would return to the March council meeting with a proposal for such a purchase.

Bethune Town Council meets at 7 p.m. March 8 in Bethune Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
