To a certain young person who reported the strange Snapchat you received Monday morning: We don’t know who you are, but we are very proud of you for what you did.

By now everyone knows about the message that allegedly made threats of doing harm to a person or persons at Camden High School. As it turned out, it was a prank perpetrated by a very immature and clueless 11-year-old middle school student. As this occurred in the wake of the horrific -- and what should have been utterly preventable -- mass shooting at a Florida high school, to say it gave everyone a case of the jitters would be a monumental understatement.

As it turned out, what you received on your phone was a poorly conceived, utterly tasteless joke, a highly inappropriate act stemming from immaturity and bad judgment. That individual has been apprehended and will face consequences and at the end of the day, no one was hurt -- but it was far from a harmless prank.

But you didn’t know any of that, or if you did, you recognized it for what it was and you did the right thing -- you reported it.

It’s a strange world we live in and too many times these things -- things that a few years ago would have been dismissed -- have turned out to be very real threats that have ended with very bad results. It’s sad we have to worry about such things; but we do. It can be doubly confusing as to what the right thing to do might be when you, personally, might not be sure how serious a situation is. Adults will tell you to err on the side of caution, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

You did the right thing, we are very proud of you, and we hope none of your peers will be faced with such a decision. But if they are, we hope your example will help show them the way.

Thank you.
