Bulldog golf and tennis teams get off to winning starts

Camden High freshman Wills Kelly and the Bulldog golf team kicked off the season with a pair of wins in their first two matches of the season.

In Monday’s season opener, Matt McCarley’s squad used a nine-hole 36 score from Kelly to defeat visiting Irmo, 166-233, in a match played at the Camden Country Club.

Two days later, in a match which was rescheduled from Tuesday due to that day’s rains, the Bulldogs defeated in-county rival Lugoff-Elgin, 173-199.

Kelly again was medalist on a cold afternoon in which he carded a day-best 41 for the Bulldogs.

Both Camden and Lugoff-Elgin will return to the links next Monday and Tuesday to play in the Magnolia Tournament at the Beech Creek course  in Sumter County.

Bulldog netters blank Governor’s School: The Camden boys’ tennis team blitzed the visiting Governor’s School, 6-0, in a Wednesday afternoon match played at the Roger Smoak Tennis Courts at the CHS Athletic Complex.

Camden senior Robert Lackey won at first singles for the Bulldogs by identical 6-2 scores while classmate K.P. Cassidy won, 6-0, 6-2, in second singles. In third singles, Camden’s Wilson Pope also won in straight sets by the score of, 6-0, 6-4.

The Dogs’ received a pair of 6-2, 6-2 victories from Brett Elliot and Ben Battiata at fourth and fifth singles, respectively.

The hosts closed the shutout in doubles with the pairing of Will Farmer and Will Galloway breezing to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Camden has the rest of the weeke off before returning to the courts next Monday when Col. Tim Webb’s squad travels to Columbia to kick off Region 4-AAA play with a 5 p.m. match against the host Capitals.

McBee knocks off Lady Bulldogs: In a softball game which was pushed back a day to Wednesday due to Tuesday’s rains, visiting McBee defeated Camden, 16-3, at the Marcus Warren Softball Fields facility.

Due to the inclement weather on Tuesday night, the official ceremony re-naming the field in memory of the late Marcus Warren was postponed and will be held at a later date.

Lynn Looney’s charges are scheduled to beging Region 4-AAA play tonight when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Winnsboro to take on Fairfield Central in a 7 p.m. start.
