Members of American Legion Post No. 17 and their guests packed the post Monday night as Legionnaires presented awards to public servants from several different county agencies.

Post 17 named Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Inv. Justin Spivey, as its 2018 Deputy of the Year.

According to a KCSO press release, Spivey, currently assigned to the KCSO’s narcotics unit, has been a deputy for five years, having previously worked with the S.C. Bureau of Protective Services. He is also a K9 handler, overseeing the entire KCSO K9 tracking team and is a member of the Special Response Team (SRT). Spivey devotes considerable off duty time removing and installing equipment in patrol cars to save funds for the county. His collateral duties require him to attend significant training in the areas of K9 operations, SRT operations and in narcotics enforcement. Spivey regularly makes K9 presentations to schools and at other community events.

In December 2017, Inv. Spivey was one of five deputies involved in a high speed pursuit that ended up with the fugitive suspect driving his car into the Wateree River. Spivey went into the water with other deputies to rescue a female passenger in the vehicle the suspect was driving.

According to the KCSO, Spivey is a dedicated employee who always demonstrates a high level of professionalism, integrity and one who has an enviable work ethic.

“He is an excellent representative of the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office who serves the citizens of Kershaw County in an exemplary manner,” KCSO officials said.
