The award-winning Johnson Crew wild game cooking team from Alabama will be catering the West Wateree-Lugoff Rotary Club’s annual Wild Game Dinner and Auction on Saturday, March 24.

The Johnson Crew, a family cooking team from Wetumpka, Ala., has been competing in wild game cook-offs for the past four years and winning many awards. They will bring their cooking skills to Kershaw County and prepare an expanded menu for the local wild game dinner which raises funds for the West Wateree-Lugoff Rotary Club’s Scholarship Fund to benefit Lugoff-Elgin High School seniors.

Don Johnson heads up the cooking team which has competed in wild game cook-offs throughout Alabama, including the Alabama Wildlife Federation. They also took first place in the 2017 Talladega Cook-Off for their braised lagomorph stew.
Items on this year’s menu include smoked venison and wild pork tenderloins, braised lagomorph stew with cornbread, catfish cakes with remoulade sauce on dirty rice, pheasant crackers venison rollups with sweet potato hash, smoked wild pork with barbecue sauce on Hawaiian rolls, green bean almondine, cole slaw and assorted desserts.

The dinner and auction begin at 6 p.m. at the Camden City Arena, 517 Bull St. Tickets are $50 for singles and $90 for couples. Each ticket includes dinner, beer, wine and other beverages, a tasting from the Gorget Distillery and entry for door prizes.

Tickets are available from West Wateree Rotary Club members and at Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in Lugoff, the Wateree Animal Hospital in Elgin and the Camden branch of First Citizens Bank. For additional information, contact Dr. Brian Spilker at

Since 1990, the West Wateree Rotary Club has been committed to providing scholarships to Lugoff-Elgin High School seniors. Last year’s dinner was so successful the club will award $14,000 in scholarships to seniors this spring.
