The Kershaw Soil and Water Conservation District would like to applaud Kershaw County for the purchase of the land by the U.S. 1 bridge at the Wateree River. The possibilities are endless for this piece of property.

What a great opportunity to tell the history of the Wateree River and surrounding areas, provide education about the unique responsibility required to care for the shoreline environment/ecosystem, and to identify plants and animal habitat.

This property could be a “River Park,” offering access to the river and creek which border the property. As a passive park, it might provide visitors a space to reconnect with nature by relaxing in a meadow, walking in the woods, fishing for dinner or experiencing the calming effects of the sights and sounds of water.

The conservation district hopes Kershaw County will reach out to the community for ideas and seek local partnerships as we all look forward to watching this property blossom into a cherished gem of Kershaw County.

Thank you, Kershaw County Council for your foresight!
