Wyatt breaks two CHS track marks

GARRETT LAWSON RAN to a Camden High record in the 1,600-meter run last Saturday in Columbia.

Select members of the Camden High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams participated in the 26th Annual Bojangles Track & Field Classic last Friday and Saturday at Spring Valley High School. 

The Bojangles Classic is one of 10 to 12 Elite meets throughout the United States as selected by the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation making it one of the nation’s finest high school competitions. More than 2,500 athletes, representing 197 teams from over 10 states, including an international team from Barbados, participated in the two-day event.

Camden freshman Imani Wyatt jumped her way to a first place finish in her heat of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10, setting a new school record in the process. Wyatt also completed the 100-meter hurdles with a time that broke the previous school record at 18:56.  

Senior Garrett Lawson ran hard against a tough field of competitors, finishing first in his heat, to set a new school standard in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:50.  

Personal records were achieved by all attending members of the squad. In addition to Lawson, Sam Messinides had his all time personal best runs with times of 10:48 in the 3,200 meter run and 5:08 in the 1,600 meters. Sprinter Shymeik Corbett completed the 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 11.49.

Not to be outdone, the Lady Bulldogs performed well, bringing home several personal bests of their own. The 4x 100-meter relay team of Heather Woolard, Deniah Arthur, Carleigh Vaughn and Wyatt, raced to their personal best time of 51.89.  The 4 x 400-meter quartet of Staci Sumpter, Arthur, Vaughn and Wyatt, also reached their personal best time of 4:25.  

Individual members of the girls’ team reaching their personal best times included: Sumpter in both the 100-meter dash (12.92) and the 200-meter dash (26.48); Arthur the 200-meter dash (28.07); Vaughn, who ran a 13.58 in the 100-meter dash and McKenzie Taylor, who ran a 3:02 in the 800-meter run.

Also posting strong finishes at the BoJangles Classic were Lady Bulldogs Julia Keen, Katelyn Stevens, and Zy’Aja Cook.
