Ensuring that children, especially small children, are safe while traveling in a car is, obviously, a priority for most parents. By now, everyone knows to use seatbelts, drive carefully, and in the case of smaller children -- especially those under 5 years old -- most people know to use special child car seats.

However, not everyone knows the proper way to secure a child safety seat; some may not even know if the seat they are using is appropriate for their child. Indeed, as children grow their needs change. Some may have outgrown the seat they used last year; some may actually be of a physical size where they can sit in a regular car seat safely.

SafeKids Kershaw County is a group that works to educate people, especially parents and grandparents, about best practices for child safety. To that end, Safe Kids will hold a free car seat check this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Camden Chick-fil-A parking lot. Members of SafeKids, as well as members of area rescue squads, will be available to assess your child’s needs, make recommendations for new seats or boosters, if necessary, and above all, teach you the correct way to secure both your child and the seat itself.

If you have the slightest concern about whether you have the correct seat or have the seat correctly installed, we strongly urge you to attend this free event. It will pay huge dividends, both in terms of real injury prevention and in peace of mind.
